ECOSYSTEM APPROACH TO FISHERIES

The NeXOS project extends this approach, based on the RECOPESCA project, to a European scale and adds new features. The need for measurements of oxygen and chlorophyll for coastal oceanographic research was identified. This would enable the study of eutrophisation in near-coast areas where data is sparse. The new NeXOS sensors for chlorophyll and oxygen will be developed and demonstrated.

These new sensors will also contribute to several Good Environmental Status descriptors. NeXOS will promote innovation with the improvement of the RECOPESCA Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries sensors system with very low-cost, high autonomy, small and sturdy chlorophyll and oxygen sensors for fishing vessels for an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management. The new sensors will complement the measurement of fish catch, fishing activity tracking, temperature and salinity.
